Since Monat is becoming a household name, I'm sure you've seen it on your facebook feed and maybe you even have a friend selling it, we thought it time to write a Blog specifically about these products and why we have chosen to sell them in our salon. Yes, Monat is sold through MLM however, having worked in sales for major manufacturers and importers, I know why this professional brand chose to sell through this channel. It's on target to be a BILLION dollar brand in 2018 which NO OTHER line of shampoo has accomplished with shampoo sales alone. This is why professional hair care products (those meant to be sold by professional cosmetologists in salons only) end up on the shelves of department and drug stores: salon professionals are not the greatest at recommending home care products to their clients and so, in order to reach sales targets, manufacturers "sell out" to big box stores.

Monat is the only line of NON TOXIC and CLINICALLY PROVEN anti aging hair care products that is available to us as professionals that we can offer our clients with aging hair issues: hair loss, thinning hair, coarse hair, frizzy hair, fine hair, etc. The ingredients have been tested for efficacy and proven to detoxify the follicle, increase the diameter of the hair strand and regrow hair. Some people experience a "detox" period when they first begin treatment where the sebum, product and environmental pollutants that are built up on the hair and clogging the follicles are gently removed. During this time (14-30 days) your hair and scalp may feel oily, greasy or flat but not everyone experiences a detox period. You may also notice your colour fading. This is not Monat removing your colour but, in fact, removing the build up from your hair that your colour is sitting on top of. Colours will take and hold better after you've been using Monat for 30 days or so. We do have a "What To Expect" in 90 days document and are most happy to share this with any of our Monat clients.

This is not a typical line of shampoo. These are TREATMENT products and therefore there are instructions you must adhere to for maximum results. We reccomend you shampoo your hair TWICE and leave the suds on your scalp for TWO minutes each time. Our conditioners also contain Capixl (the red clover extract for optimum growth) and therefore these can be rubbed right into your scalp, as well as through the ends of your hair. Monat also offers a treatment spray, supplements and styling product. If you are using Monat, we suggest you use ONLY Monat. You don't want to use a product full of silicones or waxes that may be detrimental to the cleansing and stimulation of the follicle.

If you are losing your hair due to Male Pattern Baldness, the plant based ingredients in Monat safely inhibit the DHT hormone that contributes to hair loss in men. Your follicles may lay dormant for up to 5 years and can be restimulated with the use of these products. It will take at least 3 months of treatment to notice new hair growth and, like with any hair growth products, you will have to comitt to continued use.

Monat products not only help with hair loss but promote healthy growth, control dry scalp and psoraisis and strengthen the anchoring of the hair in the follicle (less shedding).

Ack!!! It's winter and you may be experiencing, dry, firzzy, static-y hair and/or a flaky scalp. Let's talk about these ailments and provide you with some solutions.

Dandruff Dry skin does not cause dandruff. Dandruff is caused by a yeast that feeds off excess oil, which increases the rate of natural skin shedding. UV rays counteract the effects of dandruff causing yeast, making dandruff more prominent in the winter and early spring,

Drugstore anti-dandruff shampoos are made with tar, whereas professional anti-dandruff shampoos use zinc as the active ingredient (the maximum amount allowable without a prescription).

We recommend leaving any anti-dandruff shampoo on your scalp for a minimum of three minutes for best results.

Best products for dandruff: AG Control, Monat Black 2in1 shampoo/conditioner

Psoriasis on the scalp is much different from dandruff. Most people with scalp psorasis have it on other parts of their bidy as well. Scalp psorasis may itch and affect your hairline, forehead, neck and behind your ears. The first step in treating this is removing the scales, we suggest rubbing Monat Rejuveniqe Oil onto the scalp then using a QTip to gently release the skin. You may also use a fine tooth comb or paddle brush. We have heard from a number of our clients that the Monat products (all infused with Rejuveniqe Oil) have cleared up their psorasis better than their prescriptions. Any Monat shampoo and conditioner will help (shampoo twice and leave on scalp for two minutes each time) and we also suggest bi-weekly scalp treatments with the Rejuveniqe Oil itself.

Best products for psoriasis: Monat Rejuveniqe Oil, any Monat shampoo and conditioner (all contain Rejuveniqe Oil)

Static Dry winter air causes dry hair. Also, your hair rubbing up agains scarves and hoods creates static. Static-y hair needs moisture and a good leave in conditioner will help.

Best products for static: AG Fast Food leave in conditioner, Monat Restore leave in conditioner, Loma Leave In Conditioning Spray

Damage from heat styling becomes common in the colder months when we are using a blowdryer more often than air drying. Dry hear leads to static and damage. Besides, a leave in conditioner (Restore by Monat contains Rejuveniqe Oil that is also a heat protector) you should be using a heat proection spray before using any hot tools such as dryers and irons.

Best products for heat protection: AG Firewall, REF Heat Protection Spray, Monat Renew shampoo and Restore conditioner

We see it every day, men and woman concerned about thinning hair due to thyroid issues, hormones, aging, chemotherapy treatments, alopecia and stress. We now have your answer in Monat. Monat is a 100% natural (plant derived) and non toxic anti aging hair product line that contains Procataline™ and Capixl.

Procataline features Pea Extract, a rich source of secondary metabolites that deliver healthy nutrients to promote HAIR GROWTH and reduce the production of the DHT hormone that contributes to HAIR LOSS. Procataline also includes powerful antioxidants to combat premature THINNING, as well as protect color and shine.

Capixyl (TM), is an innovative and unique active complex designed to prevent and stop the hair loss process while stimulated hair growth. Through the use of a novel catalyst, MONAT has been able to transport Capixyl (TM), composed of a high tech patented amino acid biomimetic peptide with a Red Clover flower extract rich in Biochanin A, to the hair follicle, surrounding connective tissue, and skin, thus helping to increase the size of the hair follicle, improve hair anchoring, effectively inhibiting the formation of DHT (the hormone which shortens the hair cycle and is known to cause hair follicle damage), help reduce chronic inflammation and limit free radical damage.

DID YOU KNOW...In the United States, androgenic alopecia affects an estimated 35 million men and about 21 million women. In men, it begins at the crown, temples, or both. In women, the hair becomes thinner all over the head, though the hairline and does not recede as it does with men. Fortunately, androgenic alopecia in women rarely leads to total baldness.

To address this growing concern, MONAT developed Intense Repair Treatment which features a significant amount of Capixyl (TM), an innovative and unique active complex designed to prevent and stop the hair loss process while stimulated hair growth.

Did you know that the beauty industry in BC is de-regulated? What does that mean? In 2003 the BC Provincial Government de-regulated the personal services industry. That means that your hairdresser and/or esthetician may not be "licensed". In fact, there is no longer any licensing requirements and it is solely up the the salon/spa owner to ensure their staff is properly trained in performing hair and esthetic services. There are no regulations on apprenticeships or the length/curriculum of any cosmetology school program.

Most employers will demand a certificate of completion from a recognized cosmetology school and there is the BeautyCouncil (a voluntary membership organization working towards self regulation) that offers an examination process by which the hairdresser/esthetician can achieve a "Certified Cosmetology Professional" status, however this doesn't mean much when most consumers are completely unaware that their hairdresser, esthetician or laser technician is not licensed and their competency is not regulated by the government in any way.

As for cleanliness, we get frequent visits from Fraser Health (the office is across the street and we are in a market that is food service primary so this is expected), but I have worked in salons that were never visited by the health authorities. Think about how many salons and spas could be practicing in unsanitary conditions. We, at JOY, are certified BeautySafe (a program that mimics Food Safe but for the Beauty Industry, facilitated through the BeautyCouncil)

At JOY we do not put a new talent (recent graduate) stylist on the floor servicing guests until they have completed an advanced apprenticeship (education and working alongside our seasoned stylists) for a minimum of 3 months. We pride ourselves on hiring new talent, coaching and mentoring them personally and professionally. It's a privilege to be able to provide a platform in which these budding artists can grow and it is integral to our industry that established stylists are giving these opportunities.

The number one place consumers purchase their hair products is at the supermarket :( These products are not only primarily water, but they contain non ethically sourced, synthetic and potentially harmful ingredients. That is why they can be sold for $5 a bottle as opposed to the $20 a bottle that professional products sell for.

Professional products do have water as their primary ingredient, although some that we stock are actually Aloe Vera based, however the water to active ingredient ratio is on par as opposed to a non professional product which is  2/3-3/4 water based.

Let's discuss ingredients. Firstly, silicone. Silicone in it's natural BREATHABLE form is derived from sand- a costly extraction process. Natural silicone does not build up on your hair whereas the silicone found in non-professional products are not naturally derived and,  like wax, build up on the hair making your hair look and feel shiny but also weighed down. They coat the hair rather than penetrating in to the cuticle to fill porosity. Filling the porous cuticle layers creates a smooth surface and allows for light to reflect beautifully off the hair.

Oils derived form nuts, such as Argan, Shea and the like, are not sourced ethically in cheap products. Professional manufacturers practice fair trade and sustainable harvesting practices. There are three ways to harvest these nuts: take them off the trees, wait for them to fall naturally and wait until animals have digested and passed them and then harvest them from the animal excrement. The latter of the two are ethical harvesting procedures performed by indigenous tribes. This is more costly, especially because professional manufacturers pay fair wages to the nut farmers. There is also a cost to collecting the animal feces and extracting the nuts to press for oil. These oils are actually more effective in hair care, the nut having passed through the animal's digestive system!

Another tidbit of ingredient info: professional products use minerals such as Mica and Tourmaline for shine, where as non professional product manufactures use fish scales. Professional manufacturers generally use essential oils and clean fragrance (from the ingredient itself) as opposed to synthetic fragrance.

Professional products these days are generally also sulfate and paraben free, not tested on animals, vegan, are consciously manufactured with the environment in mind (wind and solar power) and are packaged in recycled and/or biodegradable bottles, tubes and pucks.

So as you can see, there is a reason why professional products are more expensive. Professional manufacturers use better products that are ethically sourced and in high concentration. Professional products are not primarily made of water so a little goes a long way and the product lasts months. If you find you don't get a "herbal essence" lather, it's because of the absence of sulfates; just put a bit more water onto your hair and you'll get more suds!

Remember, your salon products also come with a professional recommendation. Your JOY stylist knows your hair and will only suggest the products necessary to keep it healthy, protect your colour and maintain your look at home!
